And I am officially launching a formal investigation into what the hell is wrong with everybody.

Spoiler alert: this book sucks.

But seriously: spoilers ahead.

I was told by SO many people to wait until the second half of the book when it gets good. Hey, guess what. Do it. Guess. Did you guess that I was going to say WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND A BOOK THAT YOU THINK HALF-SUCKED?

It didn’t get better. It got way, way worse. At least at the beginning when it was boring as hell and DRAGGGGGGGING through what would hopefully become a plot, the characters had a fucking CHANCE to become interesting. Then it was like characteristic Tetris started. Here comes her awkwardness. Here comes her amazing skill set. OH MAN I NEED A STRAIGHT PIECE LIKE OH GOD DAMN IT IT’S A LIGHTNING-SHAPED “SHE HAS A FUCKING PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY” PIECE. And none of it fit.

And through all of it? Rape rape rape women are dingy bimbos rape fuck all the women you want rape rape punch women rape. Now her guardian is raping her. Now this other woman’s dad beat her. While the other one’s dad raped her. Then her brother raped her. Then her brother raped and murdered a bunch of women while this other pregnant woman’s head was held underwater. But that doesn’t stop them from being totally down with casual open relationships. Go get ‘em, boys.

What the fuck is wrong with everyone everywhere?

And the big twist at the end that Harriet was still alive? I figured that out somewhere around page three. I think it was on the cover. I think the cover of mine read “The Girl With The Harriet Is Still Alive”. I groaned through the whole damned thing as he built his way up to that anticlimax. The big twist for me was that upon discovering Harriet was still alive, Blomkvist didn’t start beating and raping her.

I’m going to go watch Howard the Duck and start moving back up the ladder of entertainment.

For every new tab you create in Safari on an iPad, the google search field is auto-selected. I instinctively switch to the address field, but occasionally I start typing a URL into the search field without noticing.

I get frustrated because I don’t have a big bag of tricks yet and sometimes I think I am boring the follow because of this.

Don’t worry too much about building your arsenal of moves just yet. The two most important things to get engrained into your brain in the beginning are these:

Just have fun. Look at your partner as much as you’re comfortable with, and smile. Laugh at fun things that happen, and laugh off the little mistakes. Fun is why you’re there. She won’t be bored as long as you’re engaged with her and bringing some joy to the dance. Don’t apologize unless you’ve accidentally bonked her in the head or something. Losing the tempo or screwing up a move are not apology-worthy.
Listen to the music. You’ll be tempted to pay too much attention to the moves. Sure, be careful not to step on your partner, and sure, give some attention to connection and form…but try to make the music just as much of a focal point as your partner. As your dancing gets more advanced, you’ll start taking classes that focus on musicality, and improvising to the nuances of the music. It helps if you start really listening to the nuances of the music early on.

Well, I didn’t “praise” the abortion quote, first of all. I reblogged it utterly without comment, not even adding a tag. I do think that the “form of rape” part is tasteless and hyperbolic, as well as perhaps offensive to rape victims (not being one, I won’t speak for them), but banning abortion does amount to compulsory maternity, and I’m not sure how you can see it otherwise.

If women are not allowed to obtain legal abortions, they’re either compelled to carry and bear a child or compelled to commit a potentially dangerous crime. Pro-lifer is a nice way of saying anti-choicer, which is a nice way of saying forced-birther. That’s what they want. If I were pregnant, these people would like to make my maternity compulsory, and force me to give birth.

Sorry for attributing “praise”, I was quite wrong about that. Merely posting the thing is — I usually assume — more like tacit agreement, which doesn’t imply complete agreement with the words that were used. But yeah, I still think you and I are mostly in agreement in terms of beliefs, as the concept of banning abortion is abhorrent to me. It’s just that “compulsory maternity” is, I think, an inaccurate and flippant way of characterizing it.

Maybe I’m just being pedantic, or maybe I’m just overly sensitive to the dismissal of other people’s beliefs with imprecise twists of phrase like Edward Abbey’s. Allow me to explain: pro-lifers believe that abortion is the killing of a baby, regardless of term length, right? Like, as soon as there’s a zygote, purposeful termination means murder to pro-lifers. Of course, I’m not telling you anything you don’t know. But my point is, anyone who supports a ban on abortion is not “compelling maternity upon you”. That was already taken care of by the owner of the other gametes in the equation. More accurately, their desire is for “compulsory responsibility” for the life inside you, only so far as “thou shalt not kill”. To take that belief system and characterize it as “a form of rape by the State” and “compulsory maternity” isn’t just hyperbole, it’s a complete dismissal of those people’s beliefs, which I just can’t get behind.

I will never, ever, ever support a ban on abortion, but I completely understand why people wish it so. I am pro-choice, but I do believe that — regardless of stage — purposeful termination is indistinguishable from manslaughter. The difference between me and a pro-lifer is that, upon hearing of an abortion, they think “murderer!” while I think “I’m terribly sorry for your loss, I can’t imagine how hard that decision was for you.” Hell, I even get a slice of those feelings over the use of Plan B, but that doesn’t quell my support of the right to choose it.

This is a hard thing to talk about, especially online, since words alone are just too clumsy for the topic. I hope I haven’t overly stirred the pot. I just thought the Edward Abbey quote was just way too jagged for the cause. Pushes the same buttons as the “baby murderer!” screamers.

No. This is bullshit. No woman wears a bikini every time she leaves the house. No woman, in any country, has to wear a bikini by law. No woman is told by her religion or by her family that she has to wear a bikini or is impure/a sinner/un-marriageable. No woman is beaten for not wearing a bikini.
